This
is an unusual view for a postcard but it provides an interesting glimpse
of the harbourside buildings of Melcombe Regis from Chapelhay Heights
on the Weymouth side of the Harbour.
The weir, the old Westham bridge and the railway viaduct can be seen in the distance. Westwey Road has yet to be constructed. Most of the buildings in the foreground were destroyed by the parachute mine dropped on November 17th. 1940. This was the town's worst explosion of the war, seventy-seven houses were destroyed and another 879 were damaged. Twelve people died including children. Investigations were to discover that it was a sea mine and was probably intended for the harbour. |
