Weymouth
- The Backwater
with the
Railway Viaduct and Road Bridge
![]() |
This is the only panoramic card in my collection, unfortunately a previous owner cut it in half presumably for easier insertion in the album.
However thanks to Photoshop I can share the view electronically.
The wooden Westham Road bridge in the background was opened in 1859 and was known as the 'Apenny Bridge ' after the toll charge which was eventually lifted in 1879. This bridge took some heavy traffic with the development of the Westham area and was replaced in 1921 with the current bridge.
The wooden railway viaduct was opened in 1863 as part of the Weymouth & Portland Railway, being replaced in 1909 with a steel viaduct which has now been replaced with a road Bridge.
